STEAM is about preparing students with the skills they’ll need to thrive in future schooling and their careers. Many jobs and technologies they’ll use don’t exist yet, so STEAM aims to develop students to be rigorous and creative problem solvers who can apply 21st Century Skills across the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics.

The STEAM learning environment

The holistic benefits of STEAM are realised by providing students with projects, a learning environment, and digital technologies to openly explore real-world challenges that require the practice and application of multiple disciplines to solve problems in context.

Integrated activities

At Larrakeyah, STEAM education is an everyday occurrence with Science, Mathematics, and The Arts commonly integrated in student activities. Classroom activities are also enhanced through our digital technologies, and 21st Century Learning programs.

STEAM Days are dedicated experiences where our school partners with industry to provide students the opportunity to solve real problems.

Integrating multiple disciplines

Since 2020, Larrakeyah Primary School has integrated the STEAM approach by using the Arts and ICT Specialist teachers as experts in their field collaborating with Classroom teachers during learning time to deliver integrated units of work guided by the 4’s and Inquiry Cycle.

A strategic journey

This has been a strategic 4 year journey, starting with 21st century learning, 4C's, Larrakeyah Learner, research into best STEAM practice from schools in Singapore and Melbourne, staff visiting STEAM schools in China and attending the STEAM conference in Sydney.

All the learnings were used to create our own model for implementing STEAM across the school.
