​Self-Organised Learning Environments (SOLE)

Self-Organised Learning Environments (SOLE) is a simple yet powerful educational approach designed to promote inquiry and foster self-empowerment, based on the research and work of Sugatra Mitra. Results show that students take increasing ownership of their learning, transforming their relationship with knowledge. Through this process, they strengthen critical thinking, collaboration and self-regulation, developing strategies for improvement and, ultimately, learning how to learn. At Larrakeyah Primary School, we believe this is essential for developing future-ready learners.

At Larrakeyah, Self-Organised Learning Environments foster curiosity, independence and teamwork through real-world inquiry. Students engage with big, open-ended questions connected to their current curriculum or global issues. Working collaboratively in small groups, they use iPads and laptops to research, discuss, and create responses that demonstrate their understanding. Teachers act as facilitators, guiding rather than instructing, encouraging students to question, explore multiple perspectives and think critically.

A typical SOLE session at Larrakeyah is student-driven and dynamic. Classrooms buzz with discussion as groups gather evidence, share discoveries and creatively present their findings through posters, digital slides, or oral presentations. Reflection at the end of each session helps students evaluate both their learning and teamwork.

This inclusive, inquiry-based model supports diverse learners by providing flexibility in approach and expression. It builds confidence, communication and digital literacy while promoting engagement and authentic problem-solving.
