Maths Focus- 1 Church
This week in 1 Church we have been learning about place value. We discovered that 2-digit numbers are groups of 10s and some 1s. We have been trying out different strategies to work out how many groups of 10s and how many 1s are in different numbers.
1 Church started off the week by exploring different maths materials to help us understand place value. We used paddle pop sticks and rubber bands to make bundles of 10s and 1s to represent 2-digit numbers. Some other materials that we used were connector cubes, straws, sticks and blocks. Giving children the opportunity to learn through hands on activities helps them to strengthen their understanding of new concepts.
Another strategy that we discovered as a class is that if you draw a line in between a two digit number, on the left side you will find how may 10s there are in the number and on the right side how many 1s there are!
Lastly, we have been practising counting by 10s. This came in handy because another strategy that we used for working out how many 10s and 1s are in a 2-digit number was skip counting by 10 up to that number, while counting with our fingers. However many fingers you’re holding up, is how many groups of 10 are in that number!
